Asian Invisibility

Senior Capstone

Diverse representation in mainstream media is important because it plays an influential role in shaping the way we understand ourselves or make sense of the way the world perceives us. To see roles in film and TV that we can connect with through our race, our skin tone, our body type, etc., allows us to feel included in a media that had otherwise pushed minorities aside through underrepresentation as well as misrepresentation. Speaking more specifically to the lack of Asian-American visibility in Hollywood, I wanted to illustrate the impact that misrepresentation and underrepresentation can have on an individual.

In this book, I designed several collages that were rich in imagery and paired them with expressive type to create a narrative from the perspective of an Asian American. Setting up my book with a landscape orientation was purposeful in mimicking the big screen of a movie theater. Through this project, I hoped to give more power to the Asian American voice and shed light on the importance of representation.
