Express Newark Branding
2021 Graphis Silver Award
Express Newark is an interdisciplinary learning space where artists, business leaders, and community residents collaborate, experiment, and innovate in partnership with the staff and students of Rutgers University-Newark.
I was able to take part in the creation and refinement of the Express Newark logomark through my time within the Design Consortium at Rutgers University-Newark. The logomark is composed of a wireframe using the letters E and N, relating to the sense of open dialogue and space that Express Newark wishes to create. This wireframe is then housed within a container composed of two colors meeting in the middle to create a third color. This third color represents the “third space” in which the idea is to create a shared space within Newark that embraces diversity and finds universality in our unique and complex lives.

Once the logomarks were finalized, I worked alongside my colleagues on the style guide for Express Newark, outlining the visual DNA of the brand. We addressed the brand’s mission and established the guidelines revolving around the logomark itself. Here, we defined how the logomark should be treated in different areas such as in print or media.
I then worked on extending the brand and designed a mailer catalog/poster that would potentially introduce Express Newark’s mission to the community and serve as an announcement of upcoming events.
